Projects
After school and during the holidays, the children from the care center get involved in different projects, from handcraft works to gardening and farming.
These projects have two main goals:
- Giving the children the opportunity to practice various practical skills in order for them to find a passion and become more independent once they leave the care center
- Generating an income at the care center and being more self-reliant on food
Handcraft works
The children get involved in handcraft works with the help of one support staff who teaches them how to recycle waste papers into paper beads from which they make creative necklaces, earrings, bags, and many other decorative works. They also learn how to sew and repair clothes with a sewing machine. Some of the crafts they make are put on sale to bring some income to the home.
Gardening
Gardening work is a project running through the year according to the seasons. The children are learning how to grow vegetables for consumption like cassava, maize, sweet potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, and beans. They are also giving a hand to harvesting the many fruit varieties growing on the compound like mangos, matooke and coffee beans. These harvests help to save on feeding costs during the good seasons.
Piggery farming
There are some pigs being looked after and fed by the children from the center. In 2023, a new piggery house was built and since then, the number of pigs is growing. The goal is that it becomes an income generating project to the center as well as a way to improve the variety of the meals.
Brick laying
The children are being exposed to brick laying, a good commercial activity which those who grow strong cannot miss taking on as a handy skill.
